Tutorial: Modifying Laser Beams – No Way Around It, So Here's How

Source: MKS Ophir

By Allen M. Cary and John McCauley, Ophir Photonics

Applying a laser to an industrial process, medical therapy, or communications technology usually requires modifications made to the laser beam in order to achieve desired results. Using beam measurement tools and different laser beam profiling techniques such as an aligned optical system, collimation and focusing, high power laser quality measurements, and proper attenuation design will make more accurate laser measurements. This application note discusses how to match an appropriate laser beam profiling technique to a laser application in order to help make the process of building a laser system more efficient and accurate.
