The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering at Missouri University of Science and Technology was one of the twelve winners of our most recent Laser Lab Awards contest.

Their prize? A UP19K-15S-H5 laser power detector and a MAESTRO display device valued at more than 3,000 USD.

The Gentec-EO Laser Lab Awards contest aims to support laboratories in universities and colleges by ensuring students have access to the same quality measurement instruments that are used today in the industry. Turns out they found a great use for this equipment!

EXAMPLE OF THE UP19K-15S-H5 AND MAESTRO IN USE IN THEIR LAB

Let’s learn what they are doing with it straight from the mouth of Professor Jie Huang:

“Here is a photo of the device being used in a femtosecond laser microfabrication system. The device was used to measure the average power of a femtosecond laser beam. My students like the tool very much. We used to use an old analog power meter (needle-based). Your device has a digital display and can output power levels accurately and continuously.”

WHAT WILL STUDENTS LEARN WITH THESE LASER BEAM MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENTS?

The department plans to use the new equipment in their lab in ways that will allow the students to perform many experiments at various wavelength and learn important concepts.

1 - FEMTOSECOND LASER POWER MEASUREMENT (1064 NM OR SHG 532 NM, 1 KHZ REPETITION RATE, 100 FS)

The students will learn how to calculate the energy density per pulse and peak power based on the average power measurement. Also, the students will learn how to calculate the conversion efficiency of a second harmonic generation.

2 - CW GREEN LASER (532 NM)

The students will learn how to calculate the intensity of an optical beam based on the power measurement.

3 - COMMUNICATION BAND FIBER-OPTIC LASERS (900 NM, 1310 NM, 1500 - 1600 NM)

The students will learn how to set up beam collimation system from optical fiber end-face to free space for the correct laser power measurement.

4 - CW BLUE LASER (400 NM, 450 NM, 485 NM)

The students will learn the relationship between excitation power and backscattered Raman and fluorescent signals.

5 - PULSED CO2 LASER (10,600 NM)

The students are building a CO2 laser fabrication system for making long-period fiber grating. The power measurement of CO2 laser passing through a cylindrical lens is critical.

6 - FIBER RING LASER DESIGN AND DEVELOPMENT (ERBIUM-DOPED FIBER WITH 980 NM PUMP)

The students will study the energy conversion efficiency of the fiber ring laser by playing with the fiber ring length, coupling coefficient, EDF length, pump power, etc.

What a program ahead for their students! Isn’t wonderful that all these experiments are now possible thanks to a product they won at the Gentec-EO Laser Lab Awards? The wide spectral range of the UP19K-15S-H5 makes the product very practical.

Gentec-EO is proud to contribute to such teaching.
