Xenics Introduces The Dione Core

Leuven, Belgium — The Dione 640 has been announced today as the new long wave infrared (LWIR) core from Xenics, Europe’s leading developer and manufacturer of advanced infrared sensors, cameras and customized imaging solutions from the shortwave infrared (SWIR) to the LWIR realm. Dione 640 is a LWIR thermal imaging core optimized to meet today’s increased demand for smaller size, lower weight and lower power (SWaP). It is a cutting edge LWIR core for the safety and security market as well as industrial applications.

Xenics accelerates the pace of innovation

After having released the new Wildcat 640 series in February and the Manx R series in April, Xenics speeds-up the innovation with Dione. For the third time this year, Xenics demonstrates its development capability by allowing its customers to benefit from latest generation products for today’s application requirements and future developments.

When SWaP becomes reality

Dione 640 is a SWaP optimized camera core based on the latest generation of 12 µm pitch microbolometer sensors. The first member of the Dione family is presented in a VGA format (640x480 pixels) and a sensitivity of 60 mK in a very small form factor; indeed, the Xenics team succeeded in integrating sensor and electronics in only 25x25x10mm3. Part of the trick was to enable Dione to operate shutter-less, where a specific software is embedded which allows automatic calibration without any mechanical shutter. Of course, this functionality can be bypassed, and customers could add their own shutter mechanisms. Since no cooling of the core is required, the power is limited to a minimum. In addition, Dione benefits from the embedded Xenics image enhancement (XIE) capabilities. Thanks to a smart electronic design, the total power consumption is only 0.8 W. With a weight of less than 20g, Dione is thus the ultimate SWaP LWIR product.

Although Dione is offered as a core, a housing reference-design able to support demanding mechanical environments is also proposed. With its 16bit digital output (compatible with the CameraLink™ protocol), triggering capacity and power supply all on the same unique SAMTEC ST5 connector and being GeniCam compliant, Dione is designed for very straightforward integration into systems.

Portable applications such as Hand-Held Thermal Imagers (HHTI), Thermal Weapon Sights (TWS), high integration surveillance or industrial hand-held thermal analysis systems will benefit from the state-of-the-Art SWaP characteristics of Dione. In addition, observation and detection systems will be improved thanks to XIE embedded software.

Dione opens new possibilities for safety and security systems as well as for industrial thermal analysis.
