Live From SPIE DSS 2012: Krell Presents Fiber Shaping Workstation For Variable Angle Polishing

Source: KrellTech

Al Cheswick, VP of sales and marketing at Krell Technologies, shows us the Trig Bare Fiber Polisher. This polisher provides variable angle polishing, real-time video monitoring, in-line surface inspection, PM fiber support and alignment, high-speed processing, and more. It's ideal for R&D and mid- to high-volume fiber polishing applications.

Al Cheswick: Hello. I am Al Cheswick from Krell Technologies. We are here in Baltimore at the Defense, Security, and Sensing Show. We are displaying Krell’s line of fiber optic equipment.

At the show, we are highlighting our Trig system. Trig is designed to polish bare fibers at variable angles. It basically consists of three modules: a polishing module, a video scope that provides in-process viewing of the actual polishing process, and a surface inspection system that allows you to view the polished surface of the fiber that was just processed.

Basically, we can activate the polishing module, and as you can see on the monitor, we have the ability to advance the fiber to the polishing surface. We are viewing this in real time so we get feedback as to when the fiber is polished at the desired angle.

After the fiber is polished at the desired angle, we can now switch the video feed to the surface inspection scope and we can slide that scope underneath the fiber, lower to the objective lens, and view the surface. We then clean.

The advantage to the Trig system is that you have the ability to polish the fibers at variable angles, monitor the polishing process in real time, and also perform inspection without removing the fiber from the system itself.
