Slowing Down Nuclear Simulations

Oregon State University researchers are using Phantom high-speed cameras to observe what happens to radioactive fuel in simulated nuclear accidents. Headed by the School of Nuclear Science and Engineering, Professor Wade Marcum is working on simulating and imaging nuclear accidents in order to prevent them, focusing specifically on making current nuclear reactors safer and more economical.

With the help of two high-speed phantom cameras, Marcum and his team of researchers hope to see the inside of a nuclear reactor and capture fuel assembly failure in real time.
