SCHOTT Defense Showcases Materials For Optics, Laser, Imaging Applications

SCHOTT will highlight advances in laser and multispectral glasses in a paper presentation, workshop, and product demonstration

SCHOTT Defense will exhibit its innovations in military-application glass and optics technologies at SPIE Defense, Security, and Sensing (DSS) 2014 in Baltimore from May 6-8, 2014 at booth 925. In addition, SCHOTT will present technical papers on new laser and infrared materials for defense products.

Many of these components and systems will be on display at the SCHOTT Defense booth (925), including a free space optical (FSO) communication system, redundant, high thru-put datacom fiber, glass-to-metal-seals, BOROFLOAT floated borosilicate, infrared glasses and materials, multispectral and laser glasses, and ZERODUR glass-ceramic, among others. SCHOTT’s highly durable glass and glass-ceramics are key components in a wide range of military equipment, including tactical wheeled military vehicle armor, night vision systems, directed energy programs, and sensitive ordnance and missile systems.

Dr. Nathan Carlie will present a technical paper to discuss the calibrated measurements of Er and Yb co-doped glasses for laser properties. SCHOTT provides Er and Yb co-doped phosphate-based laser glass for eye-safe laser range finders, with a lasing threshold at 1.5 µm used in diode and flashlamp-pumped solid-state laser systems.

Mr. Tony Hull will present a technical paper to discuss ZERODUR, known as the “gold standard” mirror material for systems which require dimensional stability in the presence of gradients and transients, now available lightweighted to the 85% to 90% level for high performance spaceborne telescopes. Mr. Hull will discuss the technical approach to making these mirrors, with examples of 0.3m to 1.2m mirrors recently built by SCHOTT. The method used to manufacture the lightweight substrate allows for remarkably attractive costs and lead times, low risk and is relevant to present and future spaceborne sensor trades.

IRG product demo: Thursday, May 8 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Matthew Roth will present SCHOTT Defense's high-performance IRG chalcogenide materials and infrared adhesive bonding, which offer multispectral imaging solutions from the visible to long-wave infrared wavelengths.
