Custom fabricated single crystal sapphire substrates that feature a smooth, polished surface finish which is suitable for epitaxy are being introduced by Meller Optics, Inc. of Providence, Rhode Island.

Meller c-Plane Sapphire Substrates are (0001) surface oriented 2.00" dia. wafers, 0.330mm or 0.440mm thick, and highly polished on the front side to a surface roughness <0.30nm (Ra) and flat to <5µm. Ideally suited for the epitaxial growth of GaN and other III-V and II-V thin-films used in the manufacture of bright blue and green LED's, these wafers can be custom fabricated and diced to sizes as small as 4mm sq.

Meller ultra-flat sapphire wafers are also available for carrier applica-tions where thin films of silicon or GaAs are polished on top. Lapped flat to <0.5 fringes at HeNe and parallel from 20 to <5 arc-seconds with +1.2µm piece-to-piece uniformity, these wafers can be supplied with one or two sides polished.
