Raytheon to Fabricate Fresnel Lens-Based Landing System for Navy

In the second big contract announcement this week, defense contractor Raytheon Co. (Lexington, MA) has won a $7 million contract from the US Navy for the manufacture of five Improved Fresnel Lens Optical Landing Systems (IFLOLS). The systems assembly, integration and testing will be performed at Raytheon Systems Co.'s Indianapolis facility.

IFLOLS is the primary visual landing aid on board aircraft carriers. The system plays an especially valuable role in poor weather conditions, providing more accuracy and better visibility for precision carrier landings. IFLOLS improves upon the design and manufacturing techniques developed for the Vertical and Short Take-off and Landing Optical Landing Systems previously built by Raytheon for Naval Air Systems Command.
