New, compact design based on proven technology

Blue Sky Research's proprietary Optical Cross Connect Switches (OXC) are based on reliable technology, proven in high volume applications such as optical data storage. Although not a MEMS design, they share many of the positive attributes of MEMS without the fundamental MEMS limitations in reliability, efficiency, non-linear control, and narrow range of angular movement.

Two OXC types will be available: 1xN and NxN. The NxN OXC's use spring mounted micro-mirrors resulting in precise 3D mirror positioning that is virtually free of hysteresis and linear in operation. This means simpler control circuits, greater reliability, lower cost, and lower power consumption. The bi-directional rotatable mirrors have a small pitch, with maximum insertion loss less than 3dB. Mirror operation is linear over a range of mirror rotation of +/- 10 degrees and is inherently self-aligning with mirror rotation times as short as 5msec.

The design requires low voltage (5V), low power driving circuits. Furthermore, the OXC incorporates Blue Sky Research's proprietary microlens technology for higher fiber coupling efficiency and simpler assembly, facilitating automated assembly and higher manufacturing yields. The 1xN OXC's use a similar actuator technology in a simplified unique optical design that assures reliable, low-insertion loss operation in a compact package.
