An optical amplifier module for use in high-speed optical transmission systems is called the S1730. The device is an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) that measures 79 x 20 x 107 millimeters – the industry's smallest full-amplifier module, according to the company. The module includes pump lasers, erbium-doped fiber, input and output power monitors and a microprocessor controller. It can be used in both pre-amplification applications requiring low noise and in booster applications requiring high power. EDFAs allow optical signals to be transmitted over very long distances without the need for signal regeneration particularly in the fast-growing dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) marketplace.
