Opnext Introduces LX4 Module In XENPAK And X2 Form Factors

LX4 Module to Support Legacy Fiber Applications

Eatontown, NJ — Opnext, Inc., a global leader in high-performance optical components, today announced the availability of an LX4 module in the X2 form factor. The LX4 module is a highly integrated, small form factor device capable of transmissions exceeding 300m of legacy MMF, as defined in the IEEE 802.3ae 10GBASE-LX4 standard. These sub-assemblies contain direct modulated uncooled DFB lasers resulting in a very economical, low-power budget device.

The Opnext LX4 transceivers support layer 2 and layer 3 switches used in premise legacy multimode fiber (MMF) applications. Legacy multimode fiber is defined as 62.5µm MMF with a modal bandwidth of 500MHz km in the 1.3µm wavelength region. Legacy MMF is prevalent in building vertical risers, and in building-building campus link applications. The X2 LX4 module transmits data over four wavelengths, 1275 nm, 1300 nm, 1325 nm, and 1350 nm, by optically combining the outputs onto a single mode fiber making it fully compliant to IEEE 802.3ae specifications. The single mode multiplexer and multi mode demultiplexer operate at the typical LX4 center wavelengths with a spacing of 24.5 nm.

"There is strong customer support for the LX4 technology; it is the only proven and robust solution that supports a large percentage of the worst case multimode fiber in the field," said Ed Cornejo, director of product marketing for Opnext. "LX4 is a qualified, standardized solution and we are pleased to be able to offer the module in the X2 form factor."

The 10GbE industry has been anticipating greater supplier participation and additional form factor support for the LX4 solution. The Opnext LX4 modules are designed to meet the 10GbE market's cost and volume expectations for both near- and long-term projections. Opnext's technology enables thermal margin for X2 form factor based systems. Opnext will also offer this solution packaged in the XENPAK form factor. Opnext is a founding member of the industry LX4 Trade Group, formed to promote interoperability and market awareness for the LX4 standard.
