Nufern Introduces PumpGuard™ Optical Fiber
Addresses Leading Cause of Pump Diode Failure
East Granby, CT -- Nufern, the largest independent manufacturer of fiber laser and amplifier modules and specialty optical fibers, has announced that it has completed the design of PumpGuard™ optical fiber (patent pending). PumpGuard optical fiber redistributes the reverse-propagating, high-brightness light, a major cause of failure in multimode diodes used to pump high beam quality fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers.
PumpGuard optical fiber provides a multitude of benefits for pump diode and pump coupler manufacturers. PumpGuard redistributes high-brightness, single-mode power, thereby eliminating the reverse-propagating, high-brightness light, a major destroyer of pump diodes. Finally, PumpGuard accomplishes the foregoing at little added cost as compared to existing fibers.
"PumpGuard optical fiber provides pump diode and pump coupler manufacturers with a secure means of enhancing the viability and lifespan of high-value multimode diode pumps, even when the pumps are exposed to severe high-brightness, back-reflected light from high beam quality fiber lasers and fiber amplifiers," said Upendra Manyam, scientist at Nufern.
PumpGuard optical fiber can be used in a variety of applications that include: pump legs on couplers and combiners, pump legs for double-clad fibers, multimode laser beam delivery fiber, and laser pump diode pigtails.
The PumpGuard family of optical fibers is currently offered in industry standard 105/125 microns and will be expanded to cover various high power delivery fibers up to 400/480 microns, with numerical apertures ranging from 0.12 to 0.22.
