New Wave Research, manufacturer of the smallest Nd:YAG lasers available for particle image velocimetry (PIV) applications, has unveiled the latest addition to its Gemini PIV product line, the Gemini PIV 200. This instrument is designed for air and water flow PIV, and produces 200 mJ of energy at 532 nm and operates at a maximum repetition rate of 15 Hz per head. Housed in the same small package as the existing Gemini, the new Gemini PIV 200 produces 67% higher energy, which allows users of PIV to expand interrogation areas by 30%.

It measures 16.63"L x 8.25"W x 3.38"H and weighs 14 lbs. The Gemini PIV 200 offers three trigger controls: single-shot, continuous, and TTL. Separate lamp and Q-switch trigger inputs allow users to vary the delay between pulses, making it possible to study widely variable flow rates. It incorporates internal, closed-loop cooling and operates from single-phase 115 or 230 VAC.
"This new Gemini laser extends our product line further into larger-area water and airflow applications," said Ed North, president of New Wave Research. "And because of its compact features, it allows customers to bring the laser to the experiment rather than bringing the experiment to the laser. In wind tunnel experiments, for example, the wind tunnel isn't going anywhere, so the small size of the Gemini PIV 200 allows for a much easier and faster set-up."
