Live From Photonics West 2012: New Packaging Option For High-Volume Silicon Avalanche Photodiodes

Source: Excelitas Technologies

Eric Desfonds of Excelitas Technologies introduces a new packaging option for their high-volume silicon avalanche photodiodes - the side-looking laminated leadless carrier (LLC) package. This feature has advantages for automated pick-and-place assembly over traditional thru-hole TO-can packaging and greatly facilitates optical design for laser meter or range-finding applications in the 500 to 1000 nm wavelength range.

Eric Desfonds: Hi. I am Eric Desfonds, and I am an applications engineer from our Montreal site for high-performance sensors. I am here to introduce Excelitas Technologies.

We are a $300 million company with 13 sites around the world. We focus on the whole spectrum of optics. We do detection solutions, elimination solutions, LEDs, Cermax lamps, and we integrate as well advanced electronic solutions for our customers.

Our goal is to engage our customers. We are really good at going engineer-to-engineer to make sure that we get the best solutions out there for our customers and enable the best solutions for all the OEMs using custom devices.

We are proud here at Excelitas to be launching a new packing option for our high-volume silicon avalanche photodiodes. We call this the side-looking LLC package. It is a laminate leadless ceramic carrier.

You can see here three units next to a diamond. The main advantage of this is beyond the high bandwidth and the high gain; the fast response, this really allows you to have high-volume automated manufacturing.

We can bring the APD close to the edge of your electronics, your PCB board and actually get the light into the detector in a much more efficient way than by using true whole packaging and typical TO-can packaging.

We are launching this here at Photonics West. This has a typical bandwidth of up to 100 GHz, giving you the high resolution that you need for rangefinding applications.

This is meant for high-volume commercial products such as golf range finding applications. High-speed 3-D laser standing applications are also an option as well as anything else.

We have designed this with our customers in mind. We have made this compliant off of the shelf. It is meant for silicon, it is meant for 650 nm to 905 nm rangefinding applications, safety, curtains, rangefinding, or just recognitions; all applications that are enabled by this new product.

We are now offering the tape and reel option. For high-volume automated packaging you can mount these and ease the assembly for automated assembly.

I hope you enjoyed this presentation. As usual, if you need any help or would like to engage engineer-to-engineer, our application engineering team aims to help get the right solution to our customers as soon as possible.

We are here to enable all of the OEMs to get the right solution for optics elimination or detection or even advanced electronics solutions. Custom is pretty much what we do.

Give us a call or visit our Website, and we will do everything that we can to help you out.

Thank you very much.
