Network Photonics opens office in Calgary
Network Photonics' Calgary office will focus initially on the development of the software needed to facilitate the design and operation of next generation optical networks. This software will allow a user to engineer efficient optical networks and streamline their operation, administration, management and provisioning (OAM&P). Optical network architect, Rainer Irashko, previously of Bell Canada, MCI WorldCom and ONI Systems, will head the facility.
"Our expansion into Canada is a very strategic step for Network Photonics," said Steve Georgis, president and CEO of Network Photonics. "Canada is a leader in the telecommunications industry and we plan to work with the local pool of talent, while contributing to growth in the Calgary community. We are extremely pleased with the team that Rainer has assembled and are fortunate to have him heading up the Canadian operations."
"Western Canada is an extremely hot area for optical networking companies largely because of the enormous amount of talent readily available in the area," said Rainer Iraschko. "I joined Network Photonics because of the opportunities this energetic, cutting-edge company has to offer in addition to the quality of life Calgary affords its residents. I'm fortunate that I am able to return to Canada with such a great company."
Network Photonics has closed two rounds of venture capital financing totaling $117 million since January 2000 and continues to grow at a very rapid pace. The company currently has over 180 employees, 120 in its Boulder, Colo. headquarters and over 60 in its Santa Rosa, Calif. engineering and manufacturing facility. Network Photonics' new Calgary facility is located in the Calgary Technology Centre next to the University of Calgary and is expected to employ 12 people by the end of this year.
Network Photonics Inc.
Headquartered in Boulder, Colo. with facilities in Santa Rosa, Calif. and Calgary, Canada, Network Photonics is developing the 3rd generation of all-optical DWDM switching and transport systems designed for metro core service providers. Its optical network solutions are based on its patent-pending CrossWave(TM) technology, which enables high-performance DWDM networks without resorting to expensive optical-to-electronic-to-optical conversion. Network Photonics' systems will enable the delivery of managed wavelength services into metropolitan areas and alleviate the growing gap between gigabit end-user networks and terabit fiber optic backbones.
