MODTRAN3.7/PcModWIN3.7 is the recognized standard for computing atmospheric transmission and radiance at medium spectral resolution (2 cm-1). This is achieved by using the latest release of MODTRAN from the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL/VSBM at Hanscom AFB, MA). PcModWin 3.7 is Ontar's user interface and display software that wraps around MODTRAN and makes it easy to use. Ontar has entered into a Cooperative Research & Development agreement with the Air Force to ensure the accuracy and reliability of PcModWin. An upgrade is currently in progress to the 4.0 version of MODTRAN.P> MODTRAN calculates up to 4 types of results for an atmospheric path:

  • atmospheric transmission
  • atmospheric radiance (self emission and scattering)
  • scattering of sunlight and moonlight into the path
  • transmitted solar irradiance to an observer

MODTRAN performs rapid calculations from the UV through the visible, infrared and microwave regions of the spectrum (0 to 50,000 cm-1). Calculations in the visible and ultraviolet spectral regions are performed at lower spectral resolution (20 cm-1), while those in the IR and longer wavelengths are done at 2 cm-1 resolution. MODTRAN includes several standard atmospheric profiles, numerous aerosol models (such as fogs, dust, cirrus, and water clouds), and a complete geometry package that allows arbitrary paths from sea level to space. You can also supply your own atmospheric profiles and aerosol properties. The molecular absorption properties are based on the internationally recognized HITRAN atlas of spectroscopic parameters.

MODTRAN is distributed as a large (>35000 lines) FORTRAN program oriented around command line operation, with inputs taken from numerous formatted input files. Operating MODTRAN directly requires extensive knowledge of the file formats and input parameters for the code. PcModWin, however, is a user-friendly input/output generation system developed by Ontar. It is a Windows-based program that organizes the inputs into screens that are easy to fill out. Click here for an example. Instead of selecting integers for cryptically named variables and hand-editing a formatted text file, you can point and click selections to prompts like "Model Atmosphere". PcModWin creates the necessary formatted input files to run MODTRAN, based on your inputs. It also includes output plotting to quickly view the results of a calculation.
