In the fields of direct materials processing as well as laser surgery and therapy, there is an increasing interest in laser systems emitting at wavelengths in the mid-infrared. This is based on their special absorption characteristics.

In contrast to GaAs-based diode lasers or Nd:YAG lasers in the wavelength regime of around 1µm, the energy of the laser beam at 2µm is absorbed by the chemical bondings of the thermoplastic material itself. The absorption of laser radiation at this wavelength in the volume of the material results in a direct and immediate heating and melting of components. This means that no color pigments or other additives are necessary.
