Canon - Mersen PR

Mersen, a global expert in electrical power and advanced materials, announces it has agreed to a global technical partnership with Canon, a leader in the fields of professional and consumer imaging equipment, industrial equipment and information systems, to deliver innovative high-end galvano scanner motors for the high-end market of laser scanning applications.

Canon's laser scanning innovations, combined with Mersen's high-speed SiC optics technology, have resulted in a new range of motorized galvano scanners installed in the GM series distributed by Canon. They aim to deliver exceptional manufacturing speed and efficiency to customers of the laser 3D printing (also called additive manufacturing), cutting, welding and marking industries.

This partnership draws on Mersen's expertise in laser application solutions with optoSiC® precision optics technology, combined with Canon's extensive expertise in high-end laser markets.

Based on the unique properties of sintered SiC, optoSiC® mirrors are notably used for high-precision applications. Mersen is also able to offer silicon carbide products for a wide range of other markets as aerospace systems and medical devices.

Luc Themelin, Mersen’s Chief Executive Officer, said: “Once again, Mersen’s ability to forge partnerships with prestigious partners, combined with its innovative spirit, contribute to develop outstanding solutions for high-growth markets. I’m very pleased to see our material expertise being brought to the world of 3D printing through this project with Canon.”

Hiroyuki Hagiwara, head of measurement equipment at Canon said: "We offer innovative solutions in the field of laser applications through the fusion of Mersen's globally recognized SIC mirror and Canon's digital galvano system. In addition, Mersen's leading materials technology, combined with Canon's optical technology and motion control technology are expected to create new chemical reactions, which will lead to new ways in the future."

Canon and Mersen will showcase the product during the Photonics West show  which will be held in San Francisco from January 27 to February 1, 2024.
