LCD Technology

Crystaloid announces the availability of an LCD technology that allows liquid crystal displays to act as electronically controlled light shutters. Displays can switch from light blocking to light transmission, and vice versa, in as little as 200 microseconds. The shutter can be tuned to specific light wavelengths, thereby allowing it to act as an electronically-controlled optical filter.

One application is an autodarkening lens in welding masks, allowing the welder to keep the mask down at all times and both hands free for tool manipulation. In a different application, the technology can be used to construct a light sensor tuned to the infrared band of the light spectrum. This would allow its use in IR detectors for medical, military, and chemical processing applications.
