The Naval Sea Systems Command has awarded Kollmorgen Corp. (Waltham, MA) a $17.5 million contract extension to provide a photonics mast production unit for the Navy's second Virginia-class submarine.

The photonics mast is a subsystem of the submarine's command and control suite. It uses color and high-definition TV, thermal imaging sensors, electronic image processing, and advanced displays to replace the traditional periscope systems. The mast is currently undergoing a multi-year sea trial aboard SSN 760, the USS Annapolis.

Each production unit covered in the contract consists of two masts with a workstation and ancillary equipment. Work on the new systems will be performed over the next two years at Kollmorgen's Electro-Optical Division in Northampton, MA. and Brattleboro, VT.
