JDS Uniphase to Begin $125 Million Expansion

As part of its highly focused effort to become a major player in the fiber optic components market, JDS Uniphase Corp. (San Jose, CA) plans to invest $125 million to expand its global operations. The largest single expansion will take place in Ottawa, Canada, where the company will begin construction of the third phase of its main campus facility, consisting of approximately 360,000 sq. ft. of additional R&D, manufacturing, and office facilities. An additional 240,000 sq. ft. of operating space will be added to other facilities, including those in Sydney, Australia; Chalfont, PA; Bloomfield, CT; West Trenton, NJ; Melbourne, FL; and Torquay, England.

Bringing total company square footage to more than 2 million, the expansion is targeted toward increasing volume capacity for a variety of products including wavelength division multiplexers, optical switches, attenuators, fiber Bragg gratings, circulators, gain flattening filters, photodetectors, wavelength lockers, and modulators, as well as modules such as amplifiers, transmitters and receivers.

The expansion comes on the heels of a string of acquisitions, including Optical Coating Laboratory Inc. (see JDS Uniphase to Acquire Optical Coating Laboratory), Sifam Inc. ( JDS Uniphase to Acquire SIFAM), Epitaxx Inc. (see JDS Uniphase Acquires Epitaxx), Oprel Inc. (see JDS Uniphase Acquires Oprel Technologies), and Ramar Corp. (see JDS Uniphase Acquires Ramar).
