High-Resolution Linear Actuator: M-230

The PI M-230 series is a high-resolution linear actuator designed for precision positioning tasks in scientific and industrial applications.

The series offers two travel ranges—10 mm and 25 mm—and is available with either a position-controlled DC gear motor or a powerful, low-vibration 2-phase stepper motor with gearhead. Both motor types ensure smooth, accurate, and repeatable motion, with the DC motor variant achieving minimum incremental steps as small as 50 nm and unidirectional repeatability of ±0.1 µm. The stepper motor variants provide open-loop positioning with minimal incremental motion of 0.1 µm.

A notable feature of the M-230 actuators is the nonrotating tip, which prevents the transfer of runout errors to the contact point, ensuring uniform movement and reducing wear, wobble, and torque. Each actuator is constructed with high-quality, low-friction, and backlash-free mechanics, including a trapezoidal-threaded spindle and robust materials such as anodized aluminum, chrome steel, and brass. The actuators are equipped with noncontact Hall effect limit switches to protect the mechanics, and position-controlled models include a differential encoder driver for reliable signal transfer over distances up to 10 meters.

The M-230 actuators offer a maximum velocity of up to 1.2 mm/s and feed forces of 45 N (stepper motor) or 70 N (DC motor), with permissible push forces up to 30 N. They operate in a wide temperature range from -20°C to 65°C and are compatible with various PI controllers and drivers. Typical applications include precision alignment and as a motorized alternative to micrometer screws, making the M-230 series a versatile and robust solution for high-precision linear motion requirements.
