High-Resolution Linear Actuator: L-220

The L-220 High-Resolution Linear Actuator from Physik Instrumente (PI) is a reference-class linear drive engineered for applications requiring high precision, force, and durability.

This actuator is available with either a position-controlled DC gear motor or a high-performance, low-vibration 2-phase stepper motor with gearhead, allowing users to select the optimal configuration for their application. The DC motor variant features high-resolution rotary encoders, enabling incremental motion as fine as 100 nm, while the stepper motor variant provides precise positioning even without position control123.

Travel ranges span from 13 mm to 77 mm, with each model capable of delivering feed forces up to 125 N. The actuators are designed for high cycle numbers and long service life, supported by robust ball screw mechanics for smooth motion and minimal wear. The nonrotating tip design ensures uniform movement, preventing wobble, torque, and wear at the point of contact, which is crucial for maintaining accuracy and longevity123.

Additional features include noncontact limit switches to protect the mechanics, a direction-sensing reference switch for efficient and collision-free referencing, and optional position-controlled variants with a differential encoder driver for safe signal transfer over long distances. The actuators are suitable for use in research, automation, and optical alignment, with models available for vacuum environments down to 10^-9 hPa. Operating temperature ranges from 5°C to 40°C, and the units are constructed from high-quality materials such as stainless steel and bronze for enhanced durability1234.

Overall, the L-220 series delivers a combination of high precision, strong force output, smooth motion, and adaptability, making it ideal for demanding industrial and scientific positioning tasks.
