General Photonics Releases Dual Channel Polarization Extinction Ratio (PER) Meter For PER Measurement Of Devices With Two Or Single Output Ports

ERM-102 Capabilities Are Ideal for Fiber Optic Sensing and Telecommunications Applications Such As Waveguide PM Fiber Pigtailing, PM Fiber Component Manufacturing and More
General Photonics, a market leader in optical polarization control and optical polarization measurement, recently announced the general availability of its ERM-102, a dual channel polarization extinction ratio (PER) meter. The ERM-102 allows simultaneous measurement of PER on two input channels, as well as comparison of the power on both channels. These functions make it ideal for fiber optic sensing and telecommunications applications. Such applications include: characterizing Y-branch waveguides; PM couplers; polarization beam splitters; PMC and PBS manufacturing; PM fiber connectorizations; depolarizer characterization; PM fiber fusion splicing; PM fiber coil production; and quality assurance for fiber gyros.
"With a PER dynamic range of 50 dB, a wavelength range of 400 nm, and an angular resolution of 0.06 degrees, our ERM-102 polarization instrument outperforms all competitors in its class," said Steve Yao, President of General Photonics.
General Photonics' ERM-102 is designed specifically to simultaneously measure the PER of a device with two outputs - for example, in a Y-branch waveguide, PM coupler (PMC), or polarization beam splitter (PBS) - although it can also measure a single channel output. Another attractive feature is that the instrument can accurately and instantaneously obtain the coupling ratio of a two-output device. The ERM-102 can also be used to measure the performance (output DOP) of depolarizers. Its bright graphic OLED display allows information to be seen at large viewing angles or at a distance. The polarization instrument has four measurement speeds ranging from 0.1 to 1 second/cycle, with the high speed for live alignment and the low speed for accuracy. The measurement data can also be stored and recalled at the touch of a button for comparison purposes. The ERM-102 automatically measures and displays the PER, polarization axis angle, power, and estimated DOP for each channel, as well as the power ratio between channels.
Summary of Technical Specifications
General Photonics' ERM-102 features an operating wavelength range of 1260 to 1650 nm. There are two built-in calibrated wavelengths for power measurement: 1550 and 1310nm, allowing users to select which to use for a particular measurement, although PER measurements are accurate across the entire wavelength range. Other wavelength ranges or calibrated wavelengths may be possible by request. For measurements at or slower than 0.4 s/cycle, PER ranges are 0 ~ 50 dB for input power -5 to 10 dBm and, 0 ~ 30 dB for input power -25 to -5 dBm. The ERM-102 has a PER resolution of 0.1 dB and PER accuracy of 3 0.15 dB for ER < 30 dB.
