Fast Positioning, Ultra-Low Profile Rotation Stage now with Higher Resolution

Source: PI (Physik Instrumente) LP

PI (Physik Instrumente) L.P., a leading manufacturer of precision motion control systems, has released a higher precision version of its M-660 low profile rotary table. Driven by piezo motors which enable the very low profile of only 14 mm (0.6in), the new model is equipped with a high accuracy direct measuring encoder and provides 8 times the position resolution of the existing version. The new high precision version of the M660 is ideal for applications including biotechnology, microscopy, mass storage device testing, photonics packaging, semiconductor, optical instrumentation and metrology.

Piezo Rotary Motor for Optical Instrumentation Tech Note

The M-660 rotary table can accelerate to velocities of 720 degrees/sec. and its directly coupled precision optical encoder resolves positions down to 4 µrad (0.00023°), providing phase-lag-free, backlash-free feedback to the servo controller. Its self-clamping ceramic drive provides very high stability, with no energy consumption at rest and no heat generation.

M-660s can be built in different sizes or with other specifications, and they are available upon request as vacuum-compatible versions.

Advantages of PILine® Micropositioning Systems
Positioning systems equipped with ceramic ultrasonic drives of the PILine® series provide several advantages over positioners that apply classic drive technology:

  • Smaller dimensions
  • Higher holding force when powered down; no holding current
  • Increased acceleration of up to 5 g
  • Increased velocity of up to 500 mm/s or 720 °/s, resp.
  • No leadscrews, gears or other mechanical components, no wear or maintenance
  • No lubricants
  • Non-magnetic and vacuum-compatible operating principle
