F-141 Compact: 6 DOF Fast Photonics Alignment System

The F-141 Photonics Alignment System is a compact, cost-optimized multi-axis solution designed for high-speed, high-precision alignment and scanning tasks in photonics applications. Developed by PI, it is ideal for photonic integrated circuit (PIC) testing, fiber optic assembly, and silicon photonics manufacturing. Available in 2-, 3-, 4-, and 6-axis configurations, the F-141 supports XYZ translation and Theta-X, Y, and Z rotational motion, enabling complete 6-degree-of-freedom alignment.
Each system integrates brushless linear motors, optical encoders, and crossed roller bearings for ultra-precise motion and excellent mechanical stability. With travel ranges up to 40 mm and speeds up to 1100 mm/s, the system supports dynamic, high-throughput operation. Rotation options include up to ±4° with microstep resolution of 0.02 µrad for fine angular control.
The controller is based on ACS’s EtherCAT® system and features embedded, proprietary scan and alignment algorithms, including the PILightning algorithm. This provides real-time signal analysis and rapid first-light detection—up to 100 times faster than traditional software-based alignment. The system also supports spiral scanning and gradient search optimization, completing full 500 µm scans in under 3 seconds.
Designed for integration in demanding optical environments, the F-141 offers flexible mounting, industry-leading repeatability (<0.06 µm linear, <2 µrad angular), and reliable coupling in photonic arrays. With machine learning-enhanced control, onboard analog signal input, and rugged mechanics, the F-141 delivers next-generation alignment performance for modern optical test and assembly lines.
