New customizable APD family suited for high-volume, cost-efficient designs in a robust, compact package

Excelitas Technologies Corp., a global technology leader focused on delivering innovative, customized photonic solutions, will unveil its new C30737MH Series Surface Mount Silicon Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs) at Photonics West 2018 (Booth #1031). The MH series enhances the company’s C30737 family of Silicon APDs with a surface mount version featuring a robust, small form factor package that is customizable to customer specifications.

The Excelitas C30737MH series APD family, which is offered in standard or custom configurations, provides high responsivity between 500 nm and 1000 nm, as well as extremely fast rise times at all wavelengths with a cut-off frequency >1 GHz for some versions. Standard versions are available in two active area sizes: 230 μm and 500 μm, optimized for 800 nm or 900 nm light detection. Breakdown voltage selection is also available.

The new series is designed for high-volume, high-performance, cost-sensitive product designs that require maximal range at consumer price points. Suitable applications include automotive LiDAR, 905 nm range-finding devices, 635 nm and 650 nm laser meters, speed measurement; area scanners for safety, surveillance, or automatic door opening; optical communication, 3D laser scanning, and gesture recognition. The parts can be used with pick-and-place tools on automated lines for optimal throughput and minimal assembly costs.

“New product designs are more and more compact, creating the need for smaller footprint components such as the MH series,” said Denis Boudreau, Product Leader at Excelitas Technologies. “The C30737MH Series Surface Mount APDs are designed to meet that need in a growing market for precision laser applications.”

Measuring just 2 mm x 1.75 mm, the C30737MH Series Surface Mount APDs are less than half the size of the Excelitas C30737CH product, enabling the customer to match the APD to their laser source and optics with tailored bandwidth, wavelength and active area to ensure optical performance and range. Operating voltage ranges can also be customized to improve gain uniformity in systems using more than one APD.
