Diode Laser For Solar Cell Processing

Source: LIMO Lissotschenko Microoptic Inc.
For the first time a high-power-diode laser line is used for the processing of efficient thin film solar cells on glass substrates. The new laser module LIMO350-L12x0.1-DL808-EX420 provides 350 W in a 12 x 0.1 mm line.

For the first time a high-power-diode laser line is used for the processing of efficient thin film solar cells on glass substrates. The new laser module LIMO350-L12x0.1-DL808-EX420 provides 350 W in a 12 x 0.1 mm line. Two key features of the laser are the high power density and the homogeneous power distribution along the line. These properties enable the processing of seed layers of amorphous silicon as well as the growth of c-Si. The main advantages, compared to traditional excimer lasers are: a compact footprint, maintenance-free operation, lower initial costs and shorter process times.

This new laser is made as a process-optimization-and-development-tool. For use in production systems, longer lines are under construction. The modular architecture of the laser lines offers an arbitrary scaling of the line length. For example a 300 mm line will soon be available which will reduce the processing time and provide an economical alternative to current techniques. In addition, LIMO can scale the output power of the 12 mm line up to 1.5 kW. This remarkable power density of 130 kW/cm² offers new opportunities in semiconductor processing like reduction of defects and impurities of dopant profiles or p-n-junctions.
