Coherent Introduces New Family of CW, Green Lasers for Bioinstrumentation, Graphic Arts, Inspection Applications
Compass 215M Lasers to be Produced in 10, 15, 20, 50, 75 mW Versions
Santa Clara, Calif., October 16, 2001 – Coherent Laser Division (CLD) (Santa Clara, CA) (Nasdaq:COHR) has extended its line of 15 mW Compass 215M diode-pumped solid-state (DPSS) continuous-wave (CW) 532-nm lasers to include 10, 20, 50 and 75 mW versions. Highly reliable, easy-to-integrate green lasers, the Compass 215M family has been specifically tailored for applications ranging from DNA sequencing and flow cytometry to photofinishing and semiconductor inspection.
"We originally developed our 15 mW Compass 215M at the request of our bioinstrumentation and photofinishing customers who wanted lower power and, in turn, a lower-cost alternative to our highly successful Compass 315M product line," said Torsten Rauch, product line manager at Coherent. "With the introduction of our 10, 20, 50 and 75 mW versions, we've now given our OEMs a cost-competitive, low-noise, highly reliable green laser source at power levels ideal for a broad range of applications."
Compass 215M lasers are conductively cooled, feature a TEM00 beam profile, and use an intra-cavity frequency-doubling crystal to convert IR emissions to the green wavelength. Like its close cousin the Compass 315M, the Compass 215M features the same modular OEM design. It also incorporates Coherent's unique Permalign™ manufacturing technique—a method where every component within the laser head is aligned with precision external tooling and then soldered into place. This ensures high reliability and unit-to-unit consistency.
Compass 215M lasers can also be coupled with Coherent's Sapphire™ laser, an optically- pumped semiconductor laser that emits in the blue region, to provide users with a unique green/blue wavelength combination. "The Compass/Sapphire tandem is especially important in the display and photofinishing markets, where they will provide the green and blue portions of an RGB source," said Rauch. "Finally, those integrators will be able to reap the benefits of all-solid-state technology at a cost-effective price. Moreover, they'll know that each system is backed by Coherent's 15 years' experience producing DPSS lasers and an installed base of over 5000 Compass 315M units in very demanding commercial applications."
Founded in 1966, Coherent, Inc. is a Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600 company and a world leader in providing photonics-based solutions for the commercial, scientific, and telecom markets.
