Coherent Expands Its Compass™ Family of Compact Solid-State Laser Modules

Santa Clara, Calif. -- Coherent, Inc. (Santa Clara, CA) introduces the Compass 405-25. As the latest addition to the company's Compass™ family of compact, solid-state lasers, the Compass 405-25 provides 25 mW at the standard 405 nm violet wavelength. Coherent offers a pulsed version of the Compass 405-25 for disk mastering and computer-to-plate (CTP) printing applications and a continuous-wave (CW) version for bioinstrumentation applications.

Particularly ideal for integration into CTP printing systems, the Compass 405-25 images plates quickly and accurately, resulting in a low price point and a high return on investment for CTP printers. The module features high optical efficiency from a compact package, fast modulation, excellent beam pointing and low-noise output. Backed by Coherent's proprietary Permalign™ manufacturing technique, the Compass 405-25 also features a long lifetime and reliable operation, further reducing the overall cost of ownership of CTP systems.

"Coherent is committed to serving the needs of the graphic arts industry. Our new violet Compass family member will provide CTP printers with a complete tool kit of reliable laser modules for processing thermal, visible, violet or ultraviolet plates," said Greg Niven, marketing director for Coherent's Graphic Arts Business Unit. "And since the Compass products are completely compatible with each other, retrofitting older systems with new violet lasers couldn't be easier."

The Compass 405-25 has the same compact footprint and modular design as the industry-standard Compass 315M, measuring just 110 mm x 50 mm x 35 mm and weighing less than 500 grams. In addition, the same control concept is used throughout the Compass family, allowing the easy exchange of electronic controls between the green Compass 315M and the violet Compass 405-25.

For high-duty bioinstrumentation applications, the CW version of the Compass 405-25 features a rugged field-proven design and light-loop control to assure robust operation in industrial environments. For added convenience, this CW version still includes a 30 kHz modulation capability.

The Compass 405-25 provides >25 mW of output and modulation up to 150 MHz, enabling faster processing for CTP printers. This laser also features high modulation depth and a rise/fall time of less than 2 ns, independent of power level. Beam pointing specifications are 6 mrad/°C (2 mrad/°C typically). In addition, all products in the Compass family are enclosed in a hermetically sealed package, to assure a long lifetime and stable operation.
