CEWQO30: International Event Series Brings Quantum Physicists To Erlangen

The international forum “Central European Workshop on Quantum Optics” (CEWQO) provides researchers with a platform to exchange ideas on current developments in quantum optics and quantum communication during its annual conferences. The 30th edition took place July 20–24 in Erlangen, jointly hosted by Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg (FAU) and the Max Planck Institute for the Science of Light (MPL).

A total of 155 scientists from 34 countries came to Erlangen to spend five days intensely discussing topics at the intersection of basic research in quantum optics and practical applications in photonic quantum technologies. Participants included both early-career researchers and experts with many years of experience.

The program covered fundamental topics such as non-classical states of light, the dynamics of open quantum systems, quantum optomechanics, and many others. Another key focus was on the technological applications of quantum states in quantum communication, sensor technology, and quantum simulation. The discourse was complemented by various physical implementation platforms, such as cavity and circuit quantum electrodynamics.

“This conference was very successful because it combined traditional topics such as quantum metrology and quantum communication with entirely new areas, such as research at the interface between quantum optics and strong-field physics, or quantum effects in optoacoustics,” says Prof. Maria Chekhova, co-organizer of CEWQO30. She leads the “Quantum Radiation” research group at MPL and holds a professorship at FAU.

23 invited speakers presented their work in Erlangen, mostly from Europe but also including researchers from the University of Tokyo (Japan), the Weizmann Institute of Science (Israel), the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (Korea), and the Beijing Institute of Technology (China).

CEWQO has been running from 1992 and has developed into one of the most important annual gatherings for European scientists in the field of quantum optics. It takes place at a different location each year.
