Candela Awarded ISO 9001 Registration

WAYLAND, MASS. (March 9) BW HEALTHWIRE -March 9, 1999--Candela Corporation (Nasdaq:CLZR) today announced that it has been awarded the ISO 9001 and EN 46001 registration for its quality management systems used to design, develop, manufacture, service and distribute its proprietary laser systems, including the GentleLASE(TM), ScleroPLUS(TM), and AlexLAZR(TM).

ISO 9001 was created by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) to provide guidelines for the quality of company systems associated with the design, manufacturing, installation and servicing of company products. EN 46001 standards are additional European quality requirements specifically relating to the design of medical devices.

ISO standards have been adopted as the primary means for evaluating the quality of manufacturing and other systems by over 80 countries worldwide, including France, Germany, Japan, the U.K, the U.S., and Canada. To qualify for these registrations, companies must implement quality management systems that comply with the international standards. Systems are then independently audited for compliance to the standards. TUV Product Service, an international firm that provides testing, assessment and certification of products and management systems, conducted the Candela audit.

"This is a major milestone in Candela's history. Meeting international standards is essential to doing business in today's global economy," said Gerard E. Puorro, Candela's president and CEO. "ISO certification underscores our ability to design and manufacture the highest quality products and will accelerate the continued growth of our business."

According to Puorro, the company's internal program to obtain the registrations was led by Edward Gramer, Candela's director of quality assurance. "I salute all of our employees who contributed to this important effort and to Candela's future success in international markets."

Candela's GentleLASE is a high-energy, long-pulse alexandrite laser used primarily for hair removal; the ScleroPLUS, the most versatile and advanced laser available today for treatment of vascular lesions; and, the AlexLAZR, the premier laser system for treating pigmented lesions and unwanted tattoos.
