Attend Al Cheswick's Presentation at Photonics West 2025: Expert Insights on Polishing PICs and Waveguides
Source: KrellTech
This technical presentation will explore the demanding challenges and advanced solutions in polishing Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) and waveguides. It will cover the necessary considerations for achieving high optical performance and the development of equipment designed to meet the stringent specifications of modern photonic applications. Methods, fixtures, and techniques for controlling critical PIC parameters such as edge geometry, material removal, surface finish, and parallelism will be reviewed.

Al Cheswick has participated in the photonics industry since 1985. As an application engineer with Dorran Photonics, he supported the groundbreaking biconic connector product line for emerging fiber optic networks. Thereafter, Mr. Cheswick managed the field deployment of fiber optic test equipment for Laser Precision Corp and GN Nettest. In 1993, he co-founded Krell Technologies, which introduced the first connector field polisher with single-mode performance. He currently serves as the president of Krell. Over 30 years with Krell, he managed the development of an innovative line of automated polishing and inspection systems that has established Krell as a global leader in PIC and waveguide processing technologies. Mr. Cheswick has a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Applied Optics and Physics and holds several patents.
