Advanced SWIR Sensor Development At SUI
Sensors Unlimited Inc. (SUI) is pioneering advancements in shortwave infrared (SWIR) sensors, emphasizing time-of-flight (TOF) imaging and avalanche photodetector (APD) technologies. These developments cater to applications like precision targeting and 3D LADAR, requiring accurate range measurements and photon detection under challenging conditions.
SUI's innovations include PIN photodiode arrays with reduced dark current and high quantum efficiency, capable of wavelengths extending up to 2.6 µm. Additionally, the company has advanced avalanche photodetector (APD) technology, integrating Geiger Mode operation for single-photon sensitivity and efficient low-temperature performance. These detectors employ innovative designs, such as trench isolation to minimize crosstalk and enhance modulation transfer function (MTF).
Their TOF sensors offer centimeter-level ranging resolution over thousands of meters, integrating synchronous and asynchronous pulse detection mechanisms. The sensors’ buffered direct injection architecture enhances dynamic gain and precise signal detection, supporting photon-starved applications.
SUI is also improving quenching circuit designs for APDs, enabling rapid reset times and minimizing dark count rates for high-speed photon detection. The company’s simulation-based approach ensures precise fabrication control, optimizing critical parameters like gain-bandwidth product and breakdown voltage.
By combining advanced ROIC integration, CMOS-compatible designs, and scalable manufacturing techniques, SUI is setting new standards for SWIR imaging and TOF systems, providing solutions with enhanced reliability, scalability, and performance for diverse optical applications.
