Advanced Photonix Introduces VUV Large Area APD

Advanced Photonix, Inc.> (Camarillo, CA) has extended the benefits of their all solid state, large area avalanche photodiode (LAAPD) technology into the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV). Specifically, these new detectors utilize a spectral enhancement that optimizes their sensitivity at 157 nm, where they deliver a gain of 250, and enables them to sense wavelengths as short as 100 nm. Typical applications include photolithography and numerous spectroscopic techniques. The new VUV LAAPDs are supplied windowless, with standard active area diameters of 3 mm, 5 mm, 10 mm and 16 mm.

Previously, the only high gain detectors available for the VUV were PMTs. However, LAAPDs offer numerous benefits over fragile, vacuum tube PMTs, including all solid state, rugged construction, compact size, higher spatial uniformity and immunity to stray magnetic fields. This patented technology also provides greater dynamic range, no settling time and simpler driving circuitry. In addition, unlike PMTs, the LAAPD is not overloaded or easily damaged by exposure to bright light. In terms of performance, LAAPDs offer VUV quantum efficiencies (QE) of up to 120%, while typical PMT QE's are about 10-25%. Furthermore, PMTs intended for VUV operation must utilize an exotic window material that transmits short wavelengths, such as MgF2.
