Adimec (, a world leader in application-specific industrial OEM camera solutions is a key partner in two newly awarded projects for advancing CMOS image sensor technology: CISTERN and EXIST. Both programs begin in April/May 2015 and will be completed in 2018.

The main objective of CISTERN, which is an acronym for CMOS Image Sensor Technologies’ Readiness for Next generation of applications, is to research technologies for CMOS image sensors needed in the future for several industries including broadcast & entertainment, high-end security, and multi-spectral imaging.  The other partners in this project are Grass Valley (project leader), Thales Angenieux, SoftKinetic Sensors, Delft University of Technology, University of Burgundy.

Adimec will contribute with video processing developments optimized for security applications and expertise with integrated camera lens assemblies.

The CISTERN project was awarded by the Cluster for Application and Technology Research in Europe on NanoElectronics (CATRENE) program which is the ambition of Europe and European companies to deliver nano-/microelectronics solutions that enable lighthouse projects and respond to the needs of society at large.

The EXIST (EXtended Imaging Sensor Technologies) consortium will investigate and develop innovative new technologies for image sensors needed in the next two generations for systems designed to improve citizen security, safety, and healthcare.  The image sensor research will focus on enhancing and extending the capabilities of current CMOS imaging devices for better performance including sensitivity, dynamic range, quantum efficiency, and more.  Key developments will be improvements in hyperspectral and multispectral capabilities.
The EXIST team consists of R&D institutes advanced in image sensor technologies, image sensor designs and video processing (IMEC, Fraunhofer IMS, Le2i, TNO, iMinds and TU Delft) and fabless design houses, semiconductor manufacturer (Sofradir) and system integrators (CMOSIS, Grass Valley, Softkinetic, Thales Angenieux, Adimec, Silios, Sofradir, Focal, and Quest).

Adimec will contribute with video processing developments optimized for very high data rates and multi/hyperspectral cameras for high-end security and medical applications.
The EXIST project was awarded by the Electronic Components and Systems for European Leadership Joint Undertaking (ECSEL JU) which offers funding for Research, Development and Innovation projects with unparalleled systemic and strategic impact for smart, sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

“We are excited to be part of these projects which allow open collaboration and innovation between leading companies and institutions,” said Joost van Kuijk, CEO/CMO of Adimec.  “We continue to invest ourselves into projects that advance imaging technology to push the capabilities for the next generation.”
The developments from CISTERN and EXIST will provide the building blocks for all partners to bring innovative products to their markets.
