Hamamatsu Corporation introduced a flat panel x-ray sensor that offers superior image quality for non-destructive inspection of microelectronic components and other applications. The C10013SK features an active pixel sensor with an area of 52.8 mm x 52.8 mm (2 in. x 2 in.), with each pixel measuring 50 µm x 50 µm. The sensor captures 1 megapixel images (1032 x 1000 pixels) at a resolution of 8 line pairs/mm. An important advantage of the C10013SK is its low-noise capability. Readout noise is 80 electrons, a significantly lower level than most digital x-ray sensors and a key factor to acquiring better images at low x-ray doses. This feature makes the C10013SK an especially good match for open-tube microfocus x-ray sources, which are low-output sources that use an extremely small focal spot size to produce clearer details in images.
The C10013SK sensor board consists of a photodiode layer, fiber optic plate, and GOS scintillator. The inclusion of a fiber optic plate under the scintillator enhances the long-term durability of the unit. During operation, the C10013SK is compatible with energy ranges from 20 kVp to 150 kVp. Analog video signals are converted into 12-bit digital signals for output to an external frame grabber via LVDS interface. A frame rate of 4 fps (single binning) is available.
