Ortel to Supply Lucent with Pump Lasers for Metro EDFAs

<%=company1%> (Murray Hill, NJ) has signed Ortel Corp. (Alhambra, CA) as a supplier of 980 nm pump lasers for its line of metropolitan-area erbium-doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs). Under terms of the multi-million dollar agreement, Ortel will provide fully qualified uncooled 980nm pump laser chips to Lucent's Microelectronics Group.

According to Anders Olsson, optoelectronics business unit vice president for Lucent, the uncooled approach will allow the company to drop the price of the finished amplifiers. "On-board coolers are not needed, resulting in significant savings in power consumption and system costs. As a result, we see the cost of 980nm pump lasers dropping to commodity levels in the next six months."
