NRC Launches Quantum Photonics Technology Program

New quantum technology solutions for cyber security, resource sensing and security sensing

Ottawa, ON (Marketwired) - As world photonics experts gather for the Schawlow-Townes Symposium in Ottawa, the National Research Council of Canada (NRC) announces a new research program that will translate quantum photonics research into technology applications for Canada's future economy.

Quantum photonics is the use of quantum systems to make devices that deliver measurement and communication solutions which cannot be achieved through conventional photonics. Working with clients and partners, the Quantum Photonic Sensing and Security research program will deliver early stage disruptive technology development, including prototype quantum systems.

Applications will focus on quantum encryption capabilities, photonic sensing equipment for the efficient extraction and processing of natural resources, and the ability to detect hazards from a safe distance using laser technologies.

Quick Facts
Quantum photonics is expected to impact one in four technologies in the global photonics market over the next 10 years.

Through the program, industrial and academic partners will be able to access state-of-the-art research infrastructure and world-leading quantum photonics expertise to accelerate early-stage technology development.

Quote
"NRC is looking 10 years ahead and developing new solutions as conventional photonics technologies reach their performance limits. Canada is in a unique position to de-risk applications of quantum enabled technologies, and bring Canadian innovation to market more rapidly."
