Electron Multiplying CCD (EMCCD) technology is an innovative approach to amplifying very low light signals above the read noise floor of the CCD, which would otherwise set the detection limit of the system. It incorporates the all solid-state electron multiplying technology based on the Impact Ionization phenomenon in silicon.
