The Optical Society Brings Breakthrough Science To Frontiers In Optics

Meeting highlights advancements by world authorities in quantum, automotive optics, nanophotonics and plasmonics technologies, and virtual reality

The Optical Society’s Frontiers in Optics (FiO) conference convenes world leaders in optics and photonics. Over 1,400 attendees from more than 60 countries come to FiO to gain insights into emerging topics in the optical sciences. Held with Laser Science, a meeting sponsored by the American Physical Society’s Division of Laser Science (DLS), FiO features presentations from two plenary speakers and seven visionary speakers on key topics:

  • The Future of Computing
  • Bending Light to Bend Reality
  • Quantum Technology for a Networked World
  • Quantum Communication and Networking
  • From Night Vision to LiDAR: An Automotive Perspective
  • Peering through the Looking Glass: The Next Frontier in Nano-optics
  • Activities Shaping the Wavefront of Nanophotonics
  • Tabletop Probes for TeV Physics
  • Chirped Pulse Amplification to ELI and Beyond

FiO also offers 50 technical sessions featuring 90 invited speakers and 200 contributed oral presentations on new research, including:

  • A new fiber-laser-based ultrasound sensor for more accurate in vivo microvascular imaging; currently being explored for more precise endoscopy
  • A new technique that significantly simplifies the development of see-through 3-D displays for augmented reality (AR)
  • Testing of lasers responsible for measuring global ground elevation, vegetation details and forest canopy height while aboard the International Space Station’s Japanese Experiment Module as part of NASA’s Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI)

A two-day science and industry showcase links basic and applied research through dynamic exhibits, product demonstrations, quick-pitch research talks, show-floor theater presentations—including a primer on understanding the U.S. National Quantum Initiative—and more.
