Snapshot: 500-Meter Cable For FireWire Cameras

Visiting Allied Vision Technologies' R&D Center these days, you may have been surprised to see this large cable reel lying on the floor. What at first glance looks like some electric or networking supplies for renovation works is actually a piece of accessories for AVT cameras going through some tests.

This yellow cable is actually a 500-meter long optical fiber connection. Allied Vision Technologies is the only machine vision camera manufacturer offering optional optical fiber ports for its IEEE1394b cameras. With the AVT Pike and Stingray fiber versions, distances of several hundred meters can be bridged with a FireWire camera without the need of an optical fiber converter. "Using this cable, our tests have shown that the cable delivers sustained data transmission over 300 meters at least", explains Daniel Kästner, Hardware Validation Technician at Allied Vision Technologies'. "Even longer distances up to 500 meters can be bridged depending on the system environment and setup".
