The S10362-11 series MPPC (multi-pixel photon counter) offers ultra-low-level light detection in a compact, easy-to-use package.

Bridgewater, NJ — Hamamatsu Corporation has introduced the S10362-11 series MPPC (multi-pixel photon counter), an advanced Geiger-mode avalanche photodiode detector that can detect light at ultra-low levels. The S10362-11 series is ideal for a variety of applications, including positron emission tomography, highenergy physics, DNA sequencing, fluorescence measurement, and environmental analysis.

The S10362-11 series has an active area of 1 mm x 1 mm, and is available in three pixel counts (100, 400, or 1600 pixels). Each pixel contains a quenching circuit so that simultaneous photon events can be counted separately and with a high degree of accuracy. Typical gain values range from 2.75 x 105 to 2.4 x 106, depending on the specific part number. The S10362-11 series detectors also feature high photon detection efficiency and peak sensitivity at 400 nm. They can be operated at low voltage (less than 90 V), are insensitive to magnetic field effects, and are available in two package types: TO-18 and ceramic.

Hamamatsu is also offering a related product, the C10507-11 series MPPC modules. The modules consist of an MPPC device (1600 or 400 pixels), current-to-voltage converter circuit, high-voltage power supply circuit, high-speed comparator circuit, counter circuit, and microprocessor. The threshold level for photon detection can be adjusted on a PC, which connects to the module via USB interface. Board dimensions are 80 mm x 55 mm. Among the potential applications for the MPPC module are nuclear medicine, medical diagnosis, drug discovery, fluorescence measurement, environmental chemical analysis, and high-energy physics.
