‘Lossless’ Metamaterial Could Boost Efficiency Of Lasers And Other Light-Based Devices

Engineers at the University of California San Diego have developed a material that could reduce signal losses in photonic devices. The advance has the potential to boost the efficiency of various light-based technologies including fiber optic communication systems, lasers and photovoltaics.

    Hyperspectral imaging (HSI) is used for many applications including satellite imaging and air reconnaissance. HSI is usually executed with bulky hyperspectral-imaging cameras that are sensitive to misalignment, very expensive, and use prisms or gratings as dispersive elements. An alternative method of HSI is the combination of linear variable bandpass filters (LVBPFs) with silicon detectors. This allows for very compact, robust, and affordable HSI detectors that offer several advantages over conventional approaches.

  • Direct Imaging Of Shale Gas Leaks Using Passive Thermal Infrared Hyperspectral Imaging

    Many types of natural gas from shale formations, including methane (CH4), are odorless, colorless, highly flammable, and leaks/emanations are important considerations for safety and the environment. Telops has recently launched the Hyper-Cam Methane, a field-deployable thermal infrared hyperspectral camera specially tuned for detecting methane infrared spectral features under ambient conditions and over large distances. This application note illustrates the benefits of using this imager a site where shale gas leaks unexpectedly happened during a geological survey near the Enfant-Jesus hospital in Quebec City, Canada, during December 2014.

    Adaptive optics (AO) is a technique used to measure wavefront errors or distortions in imaging, and to correct resulting images in real time. This article introduces adaptive optics and focuses on the benefits of using (short-wave) infrared cameras in wavefront sensing for key applications, including astronomy, laser communication, biological imaging microcopy, and retinal imaging in combination with optical coherence tomography. It also covers the fundamental performance characteristics of SWIR cameras used in adaptive optics applications.

This Q&A discusses the design process and unique features of this lasing technology, as well as future steps in making BIC lasers electrically powered and how long it might take to build a BIC laser to the desired specifications.
