This polarization independent "Perfect Shuffle" (PS) optical backplane interconnection device operates over the 800nm to 1600nm spectrum. It facilitates and simplifies backplane and instrument optical signal distribution by taking a group of signals from each board and/or instrument and distributes them to all other boards and/or instruments in a "programmed patch cord" matrix fashion. For example, a PS is created where m outputs from n boards are distributed to n inputs on m boards. This product can accommodate values for m and n up to 16 fibers (256 fiber array). The PS operates over 125oC to –55oC temperature range, and has an extremely small footprint. This ultra-low loss product is passive, requires no temperature stabilization, is available with either singlemode or multimode fiber, and has >70dB channel isolation.
