Hamamatsu Corporation has released two new series of full-frame transfer CCDs designed specifically for fluorescence spectrometry, ICP spectrometry, Raman spectrometry, semiconductor inspection, DNA sequencing, and other applications that require low-light level detection. The S9970 and S9971 series both offer line binning, which combines the charges accumulated along an entire row of pixels—a process that results in higher signal-to-noise ratio and faster signal processing than standard individual-pixel readout methods.
Another major advantage of these new CCDs is their wide dynamic range: typically 75000 for area scanning and 150000 for line binning. This is made possible through the combination of the sensors’ low dark current specification in MPP mode (as low as low as 10 e¯/pixel/s at 0°C) and low readout noise (typically 4 e¯rms). The spectral response range of the S9970 and S9971 series is from 400 to 1100 nm. For all sensors, pixel pitch is 24 x 24 µm with a fill factor of 100%. The S9971 series sensors additionally feature a built-in thermoelectric cooler.
The S9970 and S9971 series share the same pin configurations as the S7010 and S7011 series, respectively. This allows connection of the newer sensors to Hamamatsu’s C7020 and C7021 multi-channel detector heads.
