OSA Foundation Grant Recognizes Graduate Students' Optical Engineering And Lens Design Research Excellence

Award Includes Travel to OSA’s Imaging and Applied Optics Congress

The OSA Foundation (OSAF) recently announced Matthew N. Barnum of the University of Arizona and Anthony J. Visconti of the University of Rochester are the recipients of the 2012 Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grant. The grant was established by Optical Research Associates (ORA), now the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys, Inc., as a memorial to ORA’s former President and Chief Executive Officer Robert S. Hilbert. The grant recognizes the research excellence of graduate students in the areas of optical engineering, lens design, and/or illumination design.

Barnum and Visconti are both presenting papers this week during Topical Meetings at the Optical Society’s (OSA) Imaging and Applied Optics: OSA Optics and Photonics Congress, June 24-28 in Monterey, Calif. Barnum will present a paper titled “Experimental Comparison of Computational Approaches to Focus Invariant Optical Systems” at the Computational Optical Sensing and Imaging Meeting (COSI). Visconti will present a paper titled “Large Diameter Radial Gradient-Index Lenses Fabricated by Ion Exchange” at the Imaging Systems and Applications Meeting (IS).

“Bob Hilbert had a longstanding commitment to fostering technical innovation in optics and supporting optics education,” said George Bayz, vice president and general manager of the Optical Solutions Group at Synopsys. “We honor his memory with this grant program and congratulate Matthew Barnum and Anthony Visconti on their contributions to the Imaging and Applied Optics Congress.”

The Robert S. Hilbert Memorial Travel Grants are awarded to students presenting at the Imaging and Applied Optics Congress or OSA’s annual meeting, Frontiers in Optics (FiO). Barnum and Visconti were selected by program chairs from COSI, IS and the Optical Sensors Topical Meeting (SENSORS).

The application deadline for the travel grant to FiO 2012 is Aug. 20. For more information on this and other travel grants please visit the OSAF website.( http://www.osa-foundation.org/programs/TravelGrants)

About the OSA Foundation
The OSA Foundation (OSAF) was established in 2002 to support philanthropic activities that help further the Optical Society's (OSA) mission. The OSAF is concentrating its efforts on programs that provide career and professional development resources and support awards and honors that recognize technical and business excellence. The grants funded by the OSA Foundation are made possible by the generous donations of its supporters as well as the dollar-for-dollar match by OSA. The Foundation is exempt from U.S. federal income taxes under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code and is a public charity. For more information, visit www.osa-foundation.org.

About OSA
Uniting more than 130,000 professionals from more than 175 countries, the Optical Society (OSA) brings together the global optics and photonics community through programs and initiatives. Since 1916, OSA has worked to advance the common interests of the field providing educational resources to the scientists, engineers and business leaders who work in the field by promoting the science of light and the advanced technologies made possible by optics and photonics. OSA publications, events, technical groups and programs foster optics knowledge and scientific collaboration among all those with an interest in optics and photonics.
