Fiber-Coupled Pulsed Laser Diodes At 1550 nm

Pulsed laser diodes (PLDs) at 1550 nm are primarily used in next-generation eye-safe military rangefinders and friend-or-foe identification. LASER COMPONENTS has world leading 1550 nm PLD technology with superior performance and outstanding reliability.

In collaboration with our customers we develop our products further. This flexibility to address the needs of the market is one of LASER COMPONENTS' core strengths. For example, customers approached us with their requirement to better capture the beam of our 1550 nm PLDs, the emission angle of which is typical for an edge-emitting semiconductor laser. In response to this challenge, we introduced pulsed laser diodes with fast axis collimator (FAC) lenses integrated into the TO package last year. Using this expertise as a stepping stone, LASER COMPONENTS developed a technique to reliably fiber couple pulsed laser diodes, achieving excellent coupling efficiencies in the process. The final product was presented to the public for the first time last week at Photonics West.

Fiber coupling gives the customers much more flexibility in their design because now the laser and necessary drive electronics can be placed away from where the beam is actually needed. This removes a lot of constrains introduced by the optical path.

Usually the application dictates the type of fiber to be used as well as the power requirements. Thanks to a wide range of emitter sizes at our disposal, we can easily select a best match to any fiber core diameter. Using specialty fibers, customers can benefit from a whole range of unique fiber properties that influence the characteristics of the laser beam that is being transmitted. In critical cases, where even the smallest amount of power counts, fibers can be equipped with an AR coating on both ends to further increase power throughput. We possess all the required coating equipment in house.

In addition, LASER COMPONENTS is fully ITAR compliant which has made us a trusted supplier to many high-profile customers serving the military, defense, and security industry. Speak to us today about your application!
