These miniature digital camera modules — hardly bigger than a grain of salt — enable novel medical tools, where visualization is possible for the first time and where previous procedures had to be done completely blind.   • Cherenkov Emission Imaging And Spectroscopy Utilizing Isotopes And A Linear Accelerator

    There are linear accelerators (LINACs) employed in radiation oncology that produce radiation in pulsed microseconds-long bursts, generated by the accelerator waveguide. By taking advantage of a LINAC’s inherent pulsed operation, time-gated detection of Cherenkov radiation is possible, significantly improving the ratio of signal to ambient light. Recently, a research group at Dartmouth College and Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in New Hampshire led by Dr. Brian Pogue has investigated fluorescence and absorption spectroscopy methods using pulsed LINAC-induced CES2, under ambient room lighting conditions. An overview of some of their work is provided in this application note.

  • How To Push Conventional 2-Sided Contacted Solar Cells To The Max

    Of the silicon solar cells commonly manufactured today, 90 percent are based on screen-printed Ag front contacts and an aluminum-BSF (Back Surface Field) as rear passivation. Their success lies in the relatively low manufacturing cost and straightforward production technology. But they also have a downside: the typical efficiency on monocrystalline silicon is limited to about 19 percent. To overcome this hurdle, alternative cell concepts are being developed, such as PERx-type solar cells, promising efficiencies of 22 percent and higher. Researchers at imec have developed n-PERT solar cells, a specific version of a PERx-type cell with unique properties, achieving as much as 21.5 percent with a clear roadmap to reach 22.5 percent.
