Could We One Day Steer Lightning With Lasers?

Professor Roberto Morandotti and his colleagues have discovered a way to guide electric discharges -- and even steer them around obstacles -- through the clever use of lasers. This scientific breakthrough was published on June 19, 2015, in Science Advances, the new open-access journal from the editors of the international journal Science.

    Multi-Head High-Speed Camera: FASTCAM Multi

The FASTCAM Multi is a multi-head, high-speed camera system ideal for applications involving the life sciences, defense and aerospace R&D, fluid dynamics, material science, microscopy, explosives testing, off-board automotive safety testing, and digital image correlation. It can be outfitted with one to two compact camera heads that can access confined areas where traditional camera housings wouldn’t fit.

  • SWIR Imaging Camera for Advanced Research: Xeva-1.7-320
SWIR Imaging Camera for Advanced Research: Xeva-1.7-320

Xenics’ Xeva-1.7-320 digital camera combines a thermo-electrically cooled InGaAs detector head and the control and communication electronics in a compact housing. Single or three-stage Peltier cooling reduces the noise and dark current for enhanced low light-level imaging. The Xeva-1.7-320 combines standard (up to 1.7 µm) InGaAs detector arrays with various speed versions: 60 Hz, 100 Hz and 350 Hz. This allows you to choose the most suitable detector-camera configuration for applications including SWIR microscopy, hyperspectral imaging, laser beam profiling, low-light level imaging, semiconductor inspection, and medical applications.

4 Electronic Design Requirements Of The System-Integrated Soldier

Perhaps most famously portrayed in Robert Heinlein’s Starship Troopers (1959), the idea of the “future soldier” has been around for decades. As rehashed in countless science fiction films and video games, the stereotypical future soldier is equipped with a protective exoskeleton, enhanced sensory equipment, seamless communication systems, and advanced weaponry. While the concept once seemed implausible, there are many real-world projects under way focused on realizing those seemingly fictitious warfighter capabilities — by integrating a plethora of diverse electronic subsystems into a cohesively operational suit.

  • Rapid Manufacturing For Metals

This white paper describes how Proto Labs uses a range of soft and hard metals in its manufacturing services, how to “machine” these metals, how to cast and mold them, how to use 3D printing in the metal manufacturing process, and other post-processing methods for metals.

  • Optical Filters: Right In Front Of Your Eyes

Over the past decade, continued improvements in multi-layer thin film filter (TFF) design and manufacturing methods — such as in-situ optical monitoring and automated coater control with dynamic design adjustment — have enabled successful production of optical filters with increasing control over the spectral shape.  This has facilitated the production of more complex filters, including multi-band spectral performance.  Improvements in coater uniformity and machine operation efficiency achieved through quick-turn load-locked systems have reduced filter manufacturing costs, even as the complexity of filters has increased.  This reduction in price, coupled with improvements in performance, has enabled new applications using these TFFs and closed the consumer gap.

  • High Power Lasers In Medical Applications

Advances in laser technology have had a tremendous impact on the medical industry, especially medical devices, which have allowed us to live longer, healthier, and happier lives. The full list of medical procedures involving lasers is growing every day and, when discussing the development and production of medical devices, the importance of high power industrial lasers cannot be overlooked.  But, regardless of the application of the laser, controlling the process is crucial.
